Our History
There has been an Anglican presence in the area that now comprises the Episcopal Diocese of Southwestern Virginia since 1738. The Diocese of Southwestern Virginia itself, however, was not formed until 1919, when it was split off from the Diocese of Southern Virginia (itself formed by a split from the Diocese of Virginia in 1892). The Diocese of Southwestern Virginia has been served by five bishops:
1920-1938 The Right Reverend Robert Carter Jett
1938-1954 The Right Reverend Henry Disbrow Phillips
1954-1979 The Right Reverend William Henry Marmion
1979-1996 The Right Reverend Arthur Heath Light
1996-present The Right Reverend Frank Neff Powell
